The newly elected leader of the Order of Malta has said he recognises the need for change, in what he called “one of the most challenging times in its history”.
Lieutenant of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra’ Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, said in a video message on Thursday: “The Order of Malta has grown beyond all expectations in the last decades. But with this growth comes with much greater responsibility.
“Consultations to address institutional issues have already started.”
“We need to amend some of our rules and regulations and strengthen the governance, aligning them with current needs and with the role and dimension of the Order,” Fra’ Dalla Torre continued.
Fra’ Dalla Torre also emphasised a continued focus on the humanitarian work of the Order of Malta: “My dedication to promoting the spiritual dimension of our 900-year-old Order will be relentless and profound.
“The demands of those in dire need of food and medical assistance, and social and spiritual support, are increasing and it is our duty to help them.”
In his closing remarks, Fra’ Dalla Torre said: “I ask the intercession of our Lady of Filermo and the help of your prayers and your commitment to sustain me during my mandate.”
While a Grand Master is usually elected for life, Fra’ Dalla Torre will serve for one year, at the end of which another election will take place.
