The GOP frontrunner has denied a report that he is looking to purchase San Lorenzo – Pope Francis’s favourite team.
The New York Post claimed that Trump, along with business partner Alessandro Proto, sent a statement of interest to San Lorenzo.
But Trump tweeted: “A phony story that I am trying to buy a soccer team in Argentina is untrue. Never even heard of the team – no interest!”
Proto is an Italian real estate mogul thought to be the inspiration for Christian Grey, from Fifty Shades of Grey.
The pair have previously attempted to buy Columbia’s Atletico Nacional, offering $100million.
Their bid was rejected, with the club eventually going for $150million, which Trump called “unacceptable.”
“Maybe they think we’re stupid,” Trump said at the time, saying he would look for other clubs instead.
San Lorenzo is one of the five biggest teams in Argentina. The club won last year’s Copa Libertadores as South America’s best team.
Pope Francis is one of the team’s most famous fans, with players taking to the pitch with his face on their shirts during an Argentine league match against Colon de Santa Fe in March 2013..
This is not the first time Trump has been linked to Pope Francis.
The politician said if he had the chance to meet the Pope he would give him a warning.
“I’d say, ‘ISIS wants to get you’,” Trump told CNN when answering questions on what would happen if the two discussed capitalism.
Trump went on to claim that “capitalism is the only thing we have right now” in a veiled attack at the pontiff’s comments on wealth and looking after the poor.
