The statement urged the prompt release of all political prisoners and expressed support for the Catholic Bishops of Myanmar in their pleas to military authorities responsible for the coup d'etat to refrain from violence and seek reconciliation, while respecting democratic principles and human rights, "including the right to life, the prohibition of torture, the freedom of assembly, media and expression."

State violence in Mynmar escalated when police opened fire on hundreds of protesters in the cities across the country,  killing 18, according to a UN report. It is the largest number of deaths in a single day since the coup began.

Myanmar's military rulers have threatened protesters with deadly force following calls for a general strike to oppose the coup instigated on 1st February.

According to UCA News, Catholic nuns from a variety of communities in Burma have marched the streets, praying for the protestors and offering them food. Amid protests in the city of Myitkyina, the capital of the state of Kachin, nuns hung signs saying “No to dictatorship” and “Listen to the voices of people” outside of their convent.
