The Roman aristocracy learned by experience that their traditions and institutions were fragile, and depended on the faithful obedience of every citizen. But if a man were willing to use his money and mob violence and military power for his own ends, setting aside the needs of the Republic, then he could indulge dreams and ambitions that were simply beyond the minds of previous generations.

Bishop Alfonso Miranda Guardiola said that the Mexican bishops “regret the events and the deaths occurred at the United States Capitol," and added that “democracy and the rule of law need to prevail over the acts of violence.”

Whatever one calls what happened on Wednesday, the spectacle of hundreds of thugs storming, vandalizing, and occupying the US Capitol, interrupting the national legislature’s acknowledgment of the electoral votes certified by each of the states in the fullness of their rightful sovereignty, surely appalled every true American—and filled us with an immense sadness—a horrible day for the Republic.
