Joe Ansbro, who attended Stonyhurst College, the Jesuit school in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, made his Scotland debut against South Africa recently, beating the world champion Springboks 21-17 on November 20.
Uncapped Northampton centre Mr Ansbro, 25, replaced the injured Max Evans at outside centre in Scotland’s team in the second autumn Test at Murrayfield.
The Glasgow-born back was thrilled to be selected.
He said: “It’s the highlight of my rugby career so far to be called up for a game of this magnitude to represent Scotland. There’s excitement, pride and a few nerves as well – a good mix really.”
Mr Ansbro was brought up near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway and educated at Stonyhurst.
After reading biological sciences at Cambridge University he went on to play in two Varsity match wins for Cambridge over Oxford. Simon Charles, director of sport at Stonyhurst, said: “We are all immensely proud of Joe’s achievement.
“He started to play rugby at our prep school and it has been a pleasure watching this fine young man progress right up to international level.”
