The first item on Pope Francis’s Assisi itinerary was his deeply moving meeting with young people with severe disabilities at the Serafico Institute.
The Pope then greeted some of Assisi’s poor, all recipients of aid from Caritas. The meeting took place in the room where St Francis tore off his clothes, in defiance of his wealthy father, as he embarked on a life of poverty. According to Archbishop Sorrentino, 300 Jewish people were hidden in the same room from Nazis during the Second World War.
