Today marks the first anniversary of Pope Francis’s election as pontiff and he is spending the day on retreat to mark Lent.
According to the Catholic News Service, a Vatican spokesman has said that the Pope will spend the day praying. Earlier this morning the Pope tweeted the simple message, “Please pray for me”.
The week-long retreat, which Francis is taking part in with 82 cardinals and bishops, is taking place in the the town of Ariccia in the Alban Hills near Rome. It is the first time in decades that the Pope’s Lenten retreat is held outside of Rome.
Pope Francis travelled to the retreat by bus with his colleagues. A Vatican official said that this mode of transport “is something nice. It is the proof of the family, the caravan of God, serving humanity.”
