An actor who played a radical “priest” in Game of Thrones is to star as Pope Francis in a forthcoming Netflix feature film.
Jonathan Pryce, who starred as the sackcloth-wearing High Sparrow, will take on the role of Francis while Anthony Hopkins is in talks to play Benedict XVI.
The film, entitled The Pope, will cover the tumultuous period following Benedict XVI’s resignation. It is directed by Fernando Meirelles, whose credits include City of God and The Constant Gardener. The screenplay is by Anthony McCarten, who wrote The Theory of Everything. Reports say the filming is scheduled to begin in November.
Hopkins, most famous for his role as a serial killer in The Silence of the Lambs, more recently played a priest exorcist in the 2011 film The Rite.
