Widow of Palm Sunday martyr says she forgives ISIS attacker

Security personnel investigate the scene of the April 9 bomb explosion outside the Cathedral of St Mark in Alexandria, Egypt (CNS)

The widow of a man killed during the twin bomb blasts on Palm Sunday in Egypt has said she forgives the terrorist responsible.

In an interview broadcast on Egyptian television and posted on Deacon Greg Kandra’s blog, the widow told reporters: “I’m not angry at the one who did this, I am telling him, may God forgive you.

“I ask the Lord to forgive them and let them try to think – is it right or wrong?” she said, adding: “We also forgive you.”

Her husband lost his life preventing a suicide bomber from entering the Cathedral of St Mark in the port town of Alexandria. Three hours earlier, the Mar Girgis church in Tanta had also been targeted, with a total of at least 47 lives lost. Two Coptic churches in Cairo endured similar attacks just months earlier in December 2016.

After listening to the interview, the television anchor told audiences: “The Egyptian Christian deeply loves his country. If your enemy knew how much forgiveness you have for him, he would not believe it.”

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks.
