More than a million young people gathered tonight on the outskirts of Madrid for a prayer vigil with Pope Benedict XVI.

The Pope was forced to break off his address to the young people because of a torrential downpour and high winds. He continued with the vigil as soon as the rain eased, but was unable to deliver the full text of his planned address.

The vigil, which is one of the key moments of World Youth Day, is taking place at Cuatro Vientos airfield. Many young people walked the five miles from the city centre to the venue.

After the vigil, which will include silent Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, they will sleep overnight in the open air.

The Pope will return on Sunday morning to celebrate Mass.
