The Latin Mass Society has paid tribute to composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies who has has died at the age of 81.
The musician, who was born in Salford, suffered from leukaemia and died at his home in Orkney, it was announced on Monday.
Sir Peter was known for his modernist and avant-garde works, including his solo piano work Farewell to Stromness.
The LMS tweeted that he was “one of the greatest composers of our time” and that “a deep knowledge of early Catholic music was central to his work.”

Sir Peter was knighted in 1987 and in 2004 was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music. In the 2014 New Year Honours List he was named a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to music.
