A student at St Benedict’s School at Ealing in west London has been chosen for the GB Kayaking Development Squad.
Last year Emily Romain, 17, won the national indoor championships in November at Lee Valley over both 500 metres and 1000 metres. She was also third in an international regatta in France.
Emily is a member of Richmond Canoe Club which she joined two and a half years ago and she has made remarkable progress in a relatively short space of time.
All this success has not come without committed and regular training. Emily trains at least five days a week and sometimes all seven.
During the winter months it is mostly indoor fitness work in the gym, while during the summer her regular training takes place on the River Thames. She specialises in still water kayaking over distances of 200m, 500m and 1,000m.
Over the Christmas break Emily was busy training with the squad for the forthcoming international regattas, the first of which will be in April. Her long-term targets are the European under-18 championships in 2012 and the Olympics in 2016.
Nick Guise, director of sport at St Benedict’s said: “I am sure we will be hearing a lot more about Emily in the coming months and years. We wish her well and will do everything we can to support her.” St Benedict’s is a Benedictine foundation which is attached to Ealing abbey and church, a monastic community. The school, which is private, was founded in 1902.
