– Catholic Herald, Rome – The Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, where he was to undergo a scheduled surgical intervention related to an enlarged prostate.
A statement from the Press Office of the Holy See on Tuesday explained that the 65-year-old Cardinal parolin was expected to be a few days in hospital, and return to work “gradually” but offered no further details regarding the treatment or plans for convalescence.
“It is expected,” the statement read, “that in a few days [Cardinal parolin] will be able to leave the hospital and gradually resume his work.”
The Gemelli University Hospital is a general hospital in Rome. With a capacity of nearly 1600 beds, the facility is Italy’s second-largest full-service hospital and one of the largest private general facilities in Europe. Pope St John Paul II was treated at Gemelli following the 1981 attempt on his life.
