DIOCESE OF SALFORD

The Diocese of Salford has the largest Catholic population of any diocese in England and Wales after the four English archdioceses. The Diocese operates across a rich and diverse geography encompassing places such as Manchester, Blackburn, Burnley and Rochdale, and taking in a large swathe of North West England, between Liverpool and Leeds. It includes substantial, vibrant and highly-populated metropolitan centres, rural towns and villages, and areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the Forest of Bowland to the north.

Under the leadership of Bishop John Arnold the Diocese has launched its Hope in the Future programme, an inspiring call to strengthen communities within the Diocese and an invitation to every parish to recognise their potential to bring good works to those in need and develop their missionary identity.

With Central Services based in a beautifully refurbished building at Cathedral Centre in the heart of Salford, the Diocese is a sizable and complex organisation employing some 200 people. It supports the work of 133 Canonical parishes and 208 schools educating over 80,000 pupils (around 53,000 of whom are Catholic). It includes over 1,000 properties, comprising churches, presbyteries, parish halls, schools and dwellings for retired clergy, and more than 50 charitable and social outreach organisations.

Reporting to the Bishop and working closely with the Moderator of the Curia, the role of Chief Operating Officer has been created to provide effective and energising leadership to a team of over 100 people working in the finance, HR and administration, communications, education, formation, property, legal and safeguarding teams. He or she will help build the systems and culture that will support a step-change in the pace of decision making and delivery across the organisation. This exciting programme of change will deliver an even better level of pro-active support for the Hope in the Future programme and for the day to day work of the parishes and schools within the Diocese.

Applications for this critical role are welcomed from people with substantial operational leadership experience, including a track record of leading and managing significant investment asset/property portfolios and of successfully managing complex operational activities. A financial qualification, MBA or comparable qualification is also required. This senior role comes with a genuine occupational requirement to be a practising and committed member of the Catholic Church.
